This video walks through my typical process for ensuring accurate and well-timed captions. I start by uploading the video using the “unlisted” option preventing the media from being found via search. I then wait a few minutes for YouTube to create “auto captions.”
In the past year, their auto-captions have improved incredibly well. However, they still require human review and editing. More recently, I’ve been using a custom local .VTT editor (made using Claude AI).
Important lesson learned: The .VTT file associated with the default auto-captions has a variety of timestamps because of the way YouTube progressively reveals captions (often one word at a time). By, re-publishing the .VTT file, the file format is simpler and easier for my custom .VTT editor to parse.
